Feast of the Gods, possibly the Feast at the Wedding of Peleus and Thetis

Immediately striking here is the red colour – the picture is painted in many shades of red, which is why it is known as a rosaille. Rosailles mainly served as studies, but Bloemaert considered his painting an independent artwork and as such he signed and dated it.

The classical Greek gods have gathered for a feast. They are recognisable by their attributes: Poseidon by his trident, for example, and Artemis by the crescent moon in her hair. Lying in the centre, in an elegant pose that shows off her figure, is the goddess of love Aphrodite.
