Drunken Peasants at an Inn
Adriaen Brouwer
c.c.1625 - 1626
Adriaen Brouwer came from Flanders and lived for a few years in the Northern Netherlands, where he introduced the genre of peasant painting. His caricatures of peasants and their churlish ways appealed to wealthy Dutch townspeople.
Nobody in this inn has remained sober, thanks to drink, tobacco and excitement. The woman in the foreground is the worst for wear, and has passed out and toppled off her stool.
