River Landscape, seen through the Trees

Cornelis Vroom
c.c.1638

1156 - zaal 16

We are looking from a slope out over a panoramic river landscape. A little further down, some hunters are walking, and their dog is sniffing around in the foreground. Vroom created incredible depth in the landscape, by using mainly pale shades of green and blue. The dark silhouettes of the trees in the foreground reinforce this suggestion.

Vroom, who worked in Haarlem, got many commissions from the court of the stadholder. He is regarded as the forerunner of Jacob van Ruisdael.
