Portrait of a Young Man, presumably Louis Trip Jr (1638-1655)
Ferdinand Bol
1652
Relaxed, this young man is leaning on a balustrade, hand on hip. He is dressed in the fashion of his day, with long hair, a remarkable collar – without a ruff! – and wide cuffs. This is probably a portrait of Louis Trip Junior, who was descended from the Amsterdam branch of the Trip family, one of the most important merchant families in Holland.
Ferdinand Bol was a pupil of Rembrandt. They both painted portraits of several members of the Trip family.
