Bust of Stadholder-King William III (1650-1702)

Jan Blommendael
1699

361 - zaal 15

The Dutch stadholder Prince Willem III of Orange was married to Mary Stuart, the eldest daughter of King James II of England. In 1689, they were crowned king and queen of England. Ten years later, Blommendael sculpted this portrait of the king-stadholder.

Willem III is portrayed as a powerful monarch, with an ermine cloak and the chain of the Order of the Garter. In the latest fashion, he is wearing an allonge wig, which Blommendael has brought to life by drilling holes in the marble.
