Full-Length Portrait of Johan Maurits (1604- 1679), Count of Nassau-Siegen
Jan van Logteren
1727
Johan Maurits had been dead for almost 50 years when Van Logteren made this terracotta statuette of him. It was probably made as a model for a life-sized statue, but we know nothing of a larger version.
Van Logteren portrayed Johan Maurits as the governor of Dutch Brazil. He based his work on a print that appeared in a book about Johan Maurits’s Brazilian years that the count had commissioned Caspar Barlaeus to write. With this book, Johan Maurits firmly established his reputation as a competent general and tolerant governor.
