Unlike in Holland, the Catholic Church remained an important patron for religious depictions in 17th-century Flanders. Rubens in particular produced large altarpieces for many churches and cloisters with his studio. For private commissions, the Flemish masters worked on a smaller scale and painted lots of imaginary landscapes and village scenes populated with peasants and country folk.
