As well as religious pictures,
painters in the 15th and 16th century also produced portraits. This was then
still the preserve of a small elite who could afford this luxury. Portraits
also appeared in altarpieces. These are often of the person who commissioned
and paid for the altarpiece, who hoped through this to guarantee their place in
the afterlife.
