Der alte Rembrandt
Rembrandt made many of his finest works in the last years of his life. They are far calmer in character than his earlier paintings. The movement is now in his loose, swiftly applied brushstrokes. The paintings reveal a great psychological insight. After 1650, many of Rembrandt’s pupils started painting in a smoother style. Only his last pupil, Arent de Gelder, remained loyal to his teacher’s loose technique.
